Clarry Conners is in a quandary over what to do with high-class filly Satin Shoes.
The three-year-old has been paid up for both the Group One Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday and the Gosford Guineas (1200m) on the NSW central coast a day later.
She is also in the mix for the Group One Sportingbet Classic (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday week.
Conners figured he had all bases covered.
But then came the rain which has left Randwick and Gosford rated in the heavy range, along with the news Black Caviar was a confirmed starter in Adelaide.
Now Conners is wondering if the spelling paddock is the best option.
“I’ve got no idea at the moment where she will go,” Conners said.
“She’s really not a wet tracker and I don’t really want to go to South Australia and take the mare on.
“But I will leave it up to her owner.”
Satin Shoes is raced by Dr Edmund Bateman who recently won the Group One William Reid Stakes with the John O’Shea-trained Foxwedge.
Conners would love to see Satin Shoes score at the elite level for his long-time client and she already has a Group One placing courtesy of her third behind Sepoy and Foxwedge in last year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes.
The filly has barrier two in the Galaxy and 17 at Gosford but the wide gate doesn’t deter Conners.
“There are a couple of double entries so she would probably end up starting from about 14 and it’s a straight run,” Conners said.
“I don’t mind her drawing wide. It’s a $250,000 race and there’s a $75,000 Inglis bonus.
“The money is nice but we’re really trying to get a Group One next to her name.”
While the jury is out on where Satin Shoes will run, stablemate Dear Demi will definitely head to Randwick and take her place in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m).
A last-start second to Flying Snitzel over 1400m on Golden Slipper day, Dear Demi will be on trial for a shot at the Group One Champagne Stakes on the final day of the carnival.
“She’s looking for the mile (1600m) now which is why we didn’t run her in the Golden Slipper,” Conners said.
“We thought the Sires would be too hard and this is an easier race.
“Hopefully she wins and goes to the Champagne.”
Kiwi star James McDonald will partner Dear Demi, the early $2.50 favourite.
